Holes Bay / Poole
Thankfully the temperature had risen just above freezing in the 90 odd minutes since I photographed the SITT going down, and in the sun it was actually quite pleasant. Returning from Weymouth 66745 now leads, and is certainly the grubbier of the two locomotives, with 66753 EMD Roberts Road trailing 3Y88 09:08 Totton Yard - Totton Yard via Weymouth and Woking across Holes Bay in stunning winter light. Note the moon which is still just about visible to the top left.

The composition of this frame is a little unbalanced for me, but I really wanted to include the moon, which can be seen to the top left. Equally what was also of interest were these hundreds of gulls all perched on the causeway embankment, a sight I'd not seen here before. However, what I hadn't counted on was the passing train causing them to all take off, and with the pole swaying around a bit I was lucky to get anything really. So, 444002 disturbs the peace and tranquillity (for the gulls) as it passes over Holes Bay, on the approach to Poole, operating 1W56 10:20 Weymouth - Waterloo.

Wareham
The first few weeks of December has been bitterly cold all across the UK with snow and ice, and temperatures around, or below freezing. And this morning was no exception near Wareham, with the temperature around -3°c, and snow still on the ground, as the Snow & Ice Treatment Train (aka SITT) passes lead by 66753 EMD Roberts Road, trailing to the rear is 66745 which appears to have lost its Modern Railways The First 50 Years nameplates, the train running as 3Y88 09:08 Totton Yard - Totton Yard via Weymouth and Woking.

With the sun getting ever lower, as well as the tide, 444031 is captured over the causeway at Holes Bay just before sunset working 1W24 15:03 Weymouth - Waterloo. I was delighted to get so many birds in the shot, including these swans, the one to the left beating its wings causing a lovely ripple affect on the calm waters.

After my previous visit, which was in the morning, I fancied trying an afternoon session and 'the golden hour' before sunset. Unfortunately due to service disruption only tow up trains would pass me here at Holes Bay, in Poole, and first up comes 444013, still sporting the now obsolete South West Trains livery, operating 1W64 14:20 Weymouth - Waterloo.

Incredibly this is actually something of a rarity. You'd expect these South Western Railway Class 450 'Desiro' units to be quite common into Weymouth, but apart from this solitary weekday working all services are operated by their 'big brother' the Class 444. In stunning early morning light 450118 works 2W26 07:25 Weymouth - Brockenhurst away from Upwey, the inward trip being 2W01 06:11 Bournemouth - Weymouth.

Following a quick-turn around at Dorchester South 6Z95 15:40 Winfrith Sidings - Crewe Coal Yard hurries past the same spot where it was photographed heading westwards. Against the low spring sun 68017 Hornet now leads this unusual, yet welcome sight, along the Dorset coast. This is the first movement, which was originally touted for a September 2021 start, and is anticipated to run roughly every four weeks or so, over a two year period, as part of the ongoing decommissioning of the Winfrith Magnox Nuclear Power Station site. Decommissioning of the site is expected to continue until 2036.

The signalling arrangements here means that any train departing the sidings must first travel to Dorchester South, then reverse to finally gain access onto the up line, after travelling over the single line section between Moreton and Dorchester South, there is no crossover provided here at Winfrith.

Its been just over ten years since a DRS train was last seen in the sidings here at Winfrith, when 37602 and 37607 arrived on 26 February 2013 during a miserable morning to work a single trial run, an image of the inward working can be seen here. Prior to that it would have been during August and September 1999 when DRS last worked out of here on a regular basis, back then of course it was classic British Rail traction in the form of Class 20 and 37 locomotives. So, back to the present day and more modern traction in the form of 68016 Fearless and 68017 Hornet standing in the terminal at Winfrith, having arrived as 6Z62 01:03 Crewe Coal Yard - Winfrith Sidings with ten empty PFA wagons, which would then be loaded here at the former Nuclear Power Station complex. Note the group of staff to the right of the loco, clearly having their photograph taken to mark this event.
