Having recently returned to Swanage Railway after a considerable amount of time away for repairs, Swanage Railway's long term resident Class 33/0 No. D6515 (33012) Lt Jenny Lewis R.N. works an up train, much to the delight of the youngsters under-taking the anti-social behaviour of "bellowing" from the front windows. This type of behaviour might have been "acceptable" back in say the 1980's, but this is 2016, even railtour operators heavily discourage such behaviour these days I'm told.
Still, D6515 Lt Jenny Lewis R.N. looks and sounds fantastic powering 1N10 15:45 Swanage - Norden.

The challenge was set by Wetbag to find a bathtub, and include it in a shot, during the 2016 Swanage Railway diesel gala. Actually it was easy as this is my regular location, and has been for many years, so I knew there was one here, but I wasn't going to tell him.
Passing "the tub" is the superb D182 - TOPS number 46045 - working the 15:15 out of Swanage past Leeson Wood.

With 20205 doing most of the work, it could be heard well before it was seen, as it drags classmate 20142 and their five-coach set on the 14:30 out of Swanage.
Although a requirement to run cab-to-cab for train brake purposes it was nice to see a Class 20 running 'nose first' for a change.

BR blue Class 31 No. 5580 certainly looks the part, along with its five-coach train, as it heads towards Harmans Cross on what could easily be a cross-country type service from the early 1970's.

There was no denying the 2016 Swanage Railway diesel gala certainly had just about something for everyone. Satisfying the English Electric fans was the Class 20's and the Class 40, along with late substitute 50035 Ark Royal, standing in for unavailable classmate 50049 Defiance. Making it a second consecutive year at the popular gala - having attended the 2015 gala - Ark Royal heads past New Barn with 2N16 13:45 Swanage - Norden in some lovely weather.

Not quite the angle I originally had in mind, but this grabbed-shot has turned out to be one of my favourite's from the 2016 Swanage Railway diesel gala.

Another impressive addition to the Swanage Railway 2016 diesel gala fleet is 20205 thanks to the hard work of the Class 20 Loco Society.
Leading 20142, which was acting as a "translator" as 20205 is air-brake only and the coaching stock is vacuum brake only, the immaculate Class 20 passes New Barn heading for Swanage on the 13:00 from Norden.

2016 proved to be another fantastic year for the Swanage Railway and its annual diesel gala, attracting a record number of visitors. Credit must go to all those involved, in whatever way, in the organising / running of such a major event, and to those who work on the locomotives that draw the crowds. 2016 certainly provided a fantastic display of fine heritage traction, some of which were visiting the Dorset railway for the first time, such as Class 40 No. D213 Andania, seen here working the 13:00 Swanage - Norden, and looking absolutely superb after a recent repaint.

I'll put my hand up straight off and admit I've never been big on 31's, and the news of 5580 - TOPS number 31162 - attending the 2016 Swanage Railway diesel gala didn't exactly fill me with enthusiasm. However, humble-pie was very quickly consumed in large amounts as I was impressed with its 1970's styling of headcode panel and pre-TOPS number - minus the 'D' .
Here the A1A Locomotive Limited owned machine makes a fine sight, almost reminiscent of a Bristol to Weymouth service with that '1O42' headcode, as it passes New Barn working 2N09 12:15 Norden - Swanage.

Unlike other railways gala's, or previous years at Swanage, it's great to see the locomotives are free of silly headboards giving a far more authentic look.

An almost overlooked part of the 2016 Swanage Railway diesel gala was the "driver experience", which gave members of the public the opportunity to driver a Class 33 from Norden up to the Swanage Railway operating boundary with Network Rail, just south of Worgret Junction. It was also a good opportunity to "escape the crowds" as the cloud cover meant it was time to call it a day.
Approaching Creech Bottom is the Swanage Railway's resident Class 33/1 No. 33111 with one such manoeuvre, sadly the sheep that were posing for the shot all moved off, bar one, when the loco's horn was sounded.

It might have been the first occasion a 'Warship' has visited the Swanage Railway, but D832 Onslaught fitted in very well and certainly seemed right at home in my opinion.
