A slightly different take on the more familiar Battledown scene as Freightliner's 70014 works 4O14 05:36 Garston - Southampton Maritime. The flyover here opened on 30 May 1897 as part of an upgrade of Battledown Junction, as it was originally known here, and quadrupling of the line towards Basingstoke. When commissioned in 1897 a new signal box was provided where the patch of land is to the left of the locomotive, in the 'V' of the junction, replacing the original signal box located where the silver location cabinet is to the right of the third (red) container. But this signal box would be short lived, and would close on 18 January 1925 with the upgrade to Worting signal box.

The first of five loco-hauled workings along the Basingstoke to Woking route in the space of a few hours, which for this line is very good going. More of an "experimental shot" really, and perhaps more wishful thinking that the horses - there were 13 in total huddled around the gate waiting for food - would move further into the field, alas it was not to be as 59206 John F. Well, this was a close run thing.
After a stunning start to the morning, a fine forecast for the day - and the promise of some interesting traction for the Marchwood - what could go wrong?
Firstly, it didn't take long for the inevitable floaters to appear and the shadow of one can be seen, to the left of the frame, as the shadow chases the train along the track. Not the frame I had in mind.
Secondly, a disappointingly light load on 6V38 11:00 Marchwood - Didcot presents no problem for 60099 in its unique silver Tata Steel livery as it passes Southampton Maritime.
