Eastleigh T&RSMD

Picture
Class 25 No.25181 finds itself in the most unlikely of places, and not for all the right reasons. Having been paired up with classmate No.25191 the pair were entrusted to work F&W Tours 'Coastway Crusader' 1Z36 06:12 Wolverhampton on 27 July 1986 forward from Bristol Temple Meads to Ludgershall, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. However, for 25181 this would turn out to be one journey too many and duly failed at Ludgershall with low oil pressure. Unfortunately it was then dragged by classmate 25191 for the five miles trip back along the goods branch to Andover with its handbrake still 'on'. With bad wheelflats it would be abandoned at Andover, the tour eventually going forward with 33011 and 25191. Here 25181 has just made its final journey and is seen at Eastleigh T&RSMD having been wheel-skated overnight from Andover, here it would remain until final scrapping in July 1988.

Stafford

Picture
Sunday morning at Stafford, and 47973 Midland Counties 150 1839-1989 and 47624 awaiting their next turn's of duty dragging electric-hauled services during weekend engineering works, which requires the 25Kv AC overhead electric to be isolated. Previously No.47561; 47973 Midland Counties 150 1839-1989 carries the unique BR Midland departmental maroon livery. Beyond in the more standard BR blue livery 47624 can be seen with a 'scar' to its lower body-side where it carried the name Cyclops. Both locomotives have long since been scrapped.

Bournemouth

Picture
With torrential rainfall causing flooding of the line between Sway and New Milton several Class 47's were pressed into action to haul electric trains from Brockenhurst to Bournemouth through the affected area as the power was isolated to the conductor rail. Former Thornaby favourite 47301 - carrying the unnoficaial painted name Centurian - was one such locomotive, seen here in Middle Siding No.1 at Bournemouth, awaiting its next duty.
