Reading

Not where you would normally expect to find a DEMU unit at Reading - in the middle siding between Platform 8 and 9.
Presumably dumped here due to a failure during the day on the Basingstoke line, 207013 makes for an unusual sight in this part of Reading station.

Cardiff Central

A locomotive still in use on the national network in 2015 is 47749 Demelza, one of the three Class 47's owned and operated by Colas Railfreight.
Seen here in a previous guess, with an unidentified parcels working, is the same locomotive - 47625 City of Truro - standing at Cardiff Central "awaiting the road" eastwards towards Newport.

Crianlarich

With a scattering of snow still on the hills in the distance 37026 Loch Awe stands at Crianlarich with 1B20 08:20 Glasgow Queen Street - Oban. This station is the junction for the 41 mile branch to Oban - which the train is signalled on to - and the main line to Fort William.
In April 1985 Crianlarich enjoyed three trains per day (SX) to Oban, and three to Fort William - one of which being the overnight sleeper from London. By comparison, 30 years later in April 2015, Crianlarich enjoys six trains to Oban, and four to Fort William.

Ramsgate

How incredible was this? Virgin Cross-Country hired in preserved Deltic D9000 / 55022 Royal Scots Grey for the summer of 1998 to power the Saturdays only Birmingham to Ramsgate service.
Seen here upon arrival at Ramsgate is the said locomotive with 1O99 06:58 Birmingham New Street - Ramsgate. It would return as 1S87 11:26 Ramsgate - Edinburgh.
During the start of 2015 Royal Scots Grey was given a fresh coat of rail blue paint, and turned out as Finsbury Park favourite 55003 Meld, as seen here.

Marchwood

Arriving at Marchwood is 47224 with a set of Freightliner flats.
This was the second of two trip workings that ran on a Saturday morning from Southampton Maritime to Marchwood MoD Sidings. The wagons were stored over the weekend due to lack of siding space at the Maritime, they would then be tripped back on the Monday morning.

Weymouth Quay

Network SouthEast Class 73 No. 73109 slowly works its way along Commercial Road - much to the interest of those up on St Thomas Street bridge - on its way back from Weymouth Quay, hauling 4TC No. 410, with 37038 trailing at the rear.
This was a test run for a Class 37 along the tramway prior to introduction on a regular service from Yeovil.

Wick

Almost as far north as you can get by rail in this country. This is 37240 on the blocks at Wick with Pathfinder Tours The Grampian Highlander.
The tour had originated from Bristol the previous evening for this marathon run to the top of Scotland, and for this section of the tour also employed 37275 Oor Wullie to partner up with 37240. The tour would then head for Aberdeen - and an overnight stay there - before heading back to Bristol the following day.

Branksome

Talk about perfect timing. Two classic forms of transportation from the 1960's briefly meet in the 1980's.
As 47575 City of Hereford passes over Bourne Valley Road bridge at Branksome with 1E63 10:40 Poole - Newcastle, a Wolseley 16/60 passes beneath.
Thanks to Neil Harvey for helping to ID the car.

Blaenau Ffestiniog

The Ffestioniog Railway's version of a Class 58, carrying the livery of a National Power Class 59, stands at Blaenau Ffestiniog having just run-round its stock before heading back to Porthmadog.
Funkey B-B diesel hydraulic carries the name Vale of Ffestiniog, which runs along the same theme as the names carried by the National Power Class 59/2's.

Still plenty of years left in 56056 when photographed passing through Reading station with westbound stone empties for Westbury.

Poole

We've all got to start somewhere, and this is one of my earlier railway photographs taken with a 110 "point and press" pocket camera my grandmother gave me.
Here a Weymouth bound Class 33/1 hauled service departs from Poole, approaching the former Holes Bay Junction. The track and signalling here was undergoing alterations at the time and the surviving semaphore signals would be abolished within a year.
The large white building in the distance is Barclays House, an iconic local landmark in Poole. The floodlights of Poole stadium can be seen to the left, the home of Elite League Poole Pirates speedway club.

BREL Crewe Works

One of the final depot / works open days I attended - not that I ever did that many - was that of Crewe Works during 1987.
Class 40 pioneer No. 40122 / D200 is one of the many exhibits on display at the works.
The locomotive is part of the national collection, more details on the class, and this locomotive, can be found here.

Honiton

A fine days bashing, including three 'O' on "the mule", what better way to spend your Sunday?
This is 47060 Halewood Sliver Jubilee 1988 arriving at Honiton working 1O37 12:28 Exeter - Waterloo, the service normally starting from Plymouth at 11:05 but due to diversions via Southampton started at Exeter. The locomotive would be replaced at Salisbury by 47363 (ex Billingham Enterprise). The other no-heat 47 working the Waterloo to Exeter line on this day was 47289, a good 96 mile run being enjoyed behind it from Honiton to Southampton on 1O43 18:35 Exeter - Waterloo.

Eastleigh

A gloomy day as 56036 passes Eastleigh with the returning 6V59 09:55 Ardingly - Westbury stone empties.
This locomotive is possibly best remembered as being the first to carry the then new large-logo livery when Stratford re-painted it in 1978. The livery would be adopted as standard and all new-build Class 56's from 56084 onwards would receive this livery.

Deputising for the booked Class 47 and a rare visitor to Dorset is 'slim Jim' 33209 leading 33013 in a very wintry Poole sidings before working 1M40 17:05 Poole - Liverpool L.S. These days you can't even get a direct service from Poole to the north as all cross country services start / terminate six miles away at Bournemouth; such is progress.
