Southampton

Brand spanking new and straight out of the box, a sparkling 59003 leads the convoy of four brand new Foster Yeoman Class 59s in Southampton Down Loop as their locomotive 47294 runs round to take them onwards to Merehead.
If memory serves me correctly the Class 59 design was based on the iconic Western diesel-hydraulic locomotives of the 1960's, at least the cab was? And the cab interior of a Class 58? The original Class 59's of course being the forerunner to today's huge fleet of Class 66's in Britain.
Another shot of this historic working can be found here.

The site to the left has now been developed and is the home to Network Rail's Thames Valley Signalling Centre, the pond still survives, albeit very overgrown now.

Woking

Not something you would normally expect to see at Woking?
Sunday engineering works on their normal line of route meant the Reading to Gatwick services were diverted via Woking, creating this quite unusual scene.

Exeter St Davids

Still just over a year to go before loco-hauled gives way to new Class 159 units on the Waterloo to Exeter route (aka West of England).
Having been displaced from duties in Scotland, and still sporting ScotRail livery, 47706 (ex Strathclyde) stands at Exeter St Davids on a fine Sunday afternoon with 1O38 14:28 Exeter St Davids - Waterloo. To the right is 2T31 14:25 Exeter St Davids - Paignton hauled by another ex-ScotRail Class 47/7 No. 47715 Haymarket.

Euston

This was one of twelve Class 87's exported to Bulgaria, a shot of it in Bulgaria can be seen here.
Of interest as well are the local permanent way gang adding some human interest to the photograph. These days under Network Rail you couldn't go anywhere near the track without all-orange hi-vis clothing from head-to-toe, a hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe-capped boots, and of course the most important item - a mountain of paperwork. I bet those men in 1985 still got the work done without all that, and safely?

The Class 47 was re-engineered as a Class 57 in 1998 becoming 57012, in 2014 it is owned and operated by Direct Rail Services.
Unfortunately 37104 was not so fortunate and was scrapped on 12 April 2000 at Immingham depot after many years in and out of traffic

The locomotive would receive the unofficial name Wyvern as applied by Tinsley depot, although this would be short lived as withdrawal came in April 1987, although it wouldn't be until February 1994 that it would be finally scrapped.

As the former D1719 / 47128 the locomotive would again be re-numbered, this time as 47811 from August 1989.
As of September 2014 the locomotive can be found at Crewe Basford Hall where it had been used as a 'super shunter' by Freightliner, although now withdrawn from service. A recent image can be seen here.

Looking rather smart in its fresh coat of unbranded Inter-City livery 47832 Tamar is seen stabled at Exeter St Davids.
This was one of several Class 47's that had small numbers applied when repainted to this livery making identification quite difficult at times.

Bournemouth

Running round their stock at Bournemouth is 31466 and 31465 which had arrived on 1O38 09:10 Edinburgh - Bournemouth, the pair returning north on 1M81 18:14 Bournemouth - Manchester.
This service was notorious during the summer of 1998 for producing unusual traction due to a shortage of serviceable Virgin Cross-Country Class 47s.
It was a day of unusual locomotives through Bournemouth as just in front of this was 58039 and 58047 up from Weymouth, see here.

Branksome

It almost seems like snow is a thing of the past these days as weather becomes more 'extreme', but in 1987 the seasons were certainly pretty more consistent.
With a decent covering of snow, an unidentified Class 73 arcs on the conductor rail as it crosses from the down to the up line at Branksome, with an empty stock move.
