Bournemouth West carriage sidings expanded over the years to cater for increased demands from the nearby Bournemouth West and Central stations.
No. 12 to 16 sidings were laid into use from 15 July 1940 for the War Department, the railway taking over responsibility from 30 June 1947. The siding beyond 4-REP No. 3015 which stands on No. 16 siding, is No. 17 siding, again a later addition coming into use from 15 November 1957.

On the fuel point is 47257 having worked in light engine from Furzebrook.
Note the stack of brake-blocks to the left. With the introduction of disc-brakes on modern units these have become a thing of the past at a depot like Bournemouth.

On its home depot of Bournemouth is Class 430 4-REP No. 3006.
Class 442 Wessex Electrics were still a couple of years away but the REP's were on the verge of withdrawal so as their traction motors could be re-used in the new units that would replace them.

From the age of steam, and the Second World War, is 1939-built former Class 402 2-HAL unit. Now into departmental use and numbered No. 002 - formed of vehicles ADS 70270 and ADS 70272 - is stabled in the non-electrified headshunt towards the bottom end of Bournemouth depot. In the distance can be seen the carriage wash.
If you had been stood in this position prior to 6 September 1965 you would have been able to have viewed trains arriving / departing from Bournemouth West station, which was situated beyond the carriage wash. The line to the far right being the former Down Main, the Up Main being lifted as part of the new depot remodelling, was situated to the right of that where the fence lies.

Looking through the acid applicator 4-REP No. 3005 awaits its turn to pass through.
Trains generally arrive on this road, before passing through this part of the wash sequence where the initial grime is treated with chemicals, then proceeding further down the same siding for final washing. Trains are then shunted into which ever siding is allocated to that particular train for its next working.

The former Bournemouth West Junction controlling movements in and out of the depot from / to Branksome, such a movement can be seen to the right with a set of empties departing the depot.
Originally the box formed part of a triangular junction with Branksome and Gas Works Junction prior to the closure of Bournemouth West station. The physical junction being where the photograph was taken. With the closure of the station, and the development of the carriage sidings into a depot complex the signalbox was down-graded, and renamed, Bournemouth Carriage Sidings Ground Frame.
