Retro-liveried Cross-Country HST power-car 43007 makes its debut on Wednesday 17 August 2018. Leading 1E63 15:27 Plymouth - Leeds, paired up with Inter-City liveried 43184 Laira Diesel Depot - Cross Country to the rear, the immaculate power-car is seen here at Powderham User Worked Crossing, near Starcross, in some glorious Devon sunshine. As has been widely reported for some time now, the remaining fleet of HST sets, operated by Cross-Country, are due to be retired from service with the final day reportedly being Monday 18 September 2023, bringing to an end long distance travel by these iconic train-sets.

From the banks of the River Culm at Ellerhayes, within Killerton Park, and sometimes known as Silverton, is this view of GWR's service 1C76 10:04 Paddington - Penzance formed of ????. Within 45 seconds of the train passing a very low flying Hercules passed over, and would almost certainly have been in the shot, typical. This was the final shot of another very enjoyable session here, even if the Colas engineers train that was expected around midday from Crediton to Westbury passed over three hours early, much to my disappointment. Great to catch up with Sparky (aka Mark Bugler) here as well.

GWR's woes continue with its fleet of Class 800 type IET trains, although many are now back up and running and with an increased inspection regime in place. This is 802020 with its "thank you key workers" vinyl's at each end of the five-car set, see here at Ellerhayes operating 1A81 10:54 Paignton - Paddington, although the service was to terminate short of its destination at Reading due to late running from Newbury onwards.

A quick dash towards the opposite end of the meadow at Ellerhayes, as two minutes after the passing of the Class 37 it was the turn of Arriva Cross-Country HST service 1V44 06:11 Leeds - Plymouth, with 43378 leading, to the rear of the seven coach formation is 43207. Now that East Midlands Trains (EMT) have withdrawn all their full length HST sets, the final service operating on Saturday 15 May 2021, it is now only Cross-Country that continues to operate a few full-length HST sets.

Loco Services Limited (LSL) 37688 ICI Great Rocks certainly looks the part in its Trainload Construction livery, and could be heard for several minutes before, and after, passing Elleryahes with 5Z41 09:00 Laira T&RSMD - Crewe Down Holding Sidings. The train is formed of a Pullman livered Mk.2 which is acting as a barrier vehicle to the five former East Midland Trains (EMT) Mk.3 coaches. The stock had been taken down to Plymouth's Laira depot on 10 May 2021 by the same loco, just as the crises with the Class 800 series IET units was at a head, and presumably they were intended to be used to either strengthen existing HST sets, or create a new set with spare GWR power-cars? In the end the stock was not used by GWR once the IET fleet was phased back into service.

Cross-Country service 1S45 09:27 Plymouth - Aberdeen formed of Voyager unit 221120 passing Ellerhayes in some fine weather. How times have changed though, not so many years ago a service such as this would have been formed of a locomotive, such as a Class 47 or 50, and perhaps eleven coaches offering a fantastic travelling experience with comfortable seats, an unobstructed view out of the window, and a full restaurant car. Sadly, the Voyager unit is a very poor substitute.

I rather liked this pool of water, so decided to stick with it, even if the shots are a bit repetitive. My fist sighting, or photograph, of the recently created 'Castle class' mini HST sets. This is 2U12 06:40 Penzance - Cardiff with power-car 43160 leading its four-coach set, 43122 Dunster Castle trails to the rear passing Ellerhayes. Pre-Covid pandemic the railways were at bursting point at times with ever increasing passenger numbers, so how can it make sense to reduce a perfectly good, all-be-it 40 year old, 125mph seven or eight coach train down to a four-coach 110mph DMU?

About to pass DM187 signal is 1C77 10:35 Paddington - Exeter St Davids. Lead unit 802013 Michael Eavis CBE with 802007 to the rear. Michael Eavis of course is a co-creator of the world famous Glastonbury Festival, that takes place on his farm at Pilton near Shepton Mallet. As for the two signals leaning outwards like that, I have to assume when newly installed in early 1985 they were perfectly vertical, but clearly over the years there's been some movement in the embankment earthworks?

Passing the site of the former Silverton station is 221129 operating Arriva Cross-Country service 1S45 09:27 Plymouth - Dundee. The platforms here were staggered either side of the road bridge, and the down platform, for Exeter bound services, would have been on this side of the bridge where the metal handrails are in the lower-right foreground, between the track and the vegetation. Silverton station, which was actually just under two miles from the village of the same name, was also served with sidings and controlled from a signal box here, which would close on 12 May 1968. A long siding also ran down to a rail served paper mill - Silverton Mill - the rails of which can still be seen today set into a 'concrete road'.
