Holes Bay Poole
South Western Railways 444043 is seen between Poole and Hamworthy operating 1W73 16:05 Waterloo - Weymouth, the train is just crossing the first of two structures along here, this one known as Creekmoor Viaduct. For generations local railwaymen would often refer to this causeway, that cuts across Holes Bay, as "the mud". So if you were to ask the signalman at Poole for example "where is the up train" and it had just left Hamworthy, you'd most likely be told "it's just coming across the mud", a term that no longer seems to be used on our ever changing railway, as people come and go. Whilst this view may not look particularly muddy, when the tide is out it becomes very obvious, and woe betide anyone who gets stuck in the mud.

Having led down from Wolverton, 56081 is now the tail-end loco for the final part of the journey into Bournemouth depot. The appalling weather didn't deter some of the the local rail enthusiast community, and it was wonderful to catch-up, albeit briefly, with Nick Prior, Nick Bartlett, Colin Stone, Pete Marsh and Mike Upshall who had turned-out to witness the first Class 56 to this area in some time.

Without a doubt "working of the year" here on the Dorset coast? Following the failure of the two Class 73's, which had over-heated at Wolverton, 56081 was hastily despatched to assist, running as 0Z56 12:30 Leicester LIP - Wolverton Centre Siding. Who could have imagined that the Class 56 would continue through to Bournemouth / Poole, but sure enough it did, and is seen arriving at Branksome, in typically summery weather, leading 73141 Charlotte sandwiching Class 442 unit 2420, and tail-gunner 73201 Broadlands, running as a very heavily delayed 5Q85 12:24 Wolverton Centre Siding - Bournemouth T&RSMD.

A lucky hole in the cloud illuminates Branksome station as Aggregate Industries liveried 66711 Sence leads 5W97 18:37 Eastleigh Yard - Bournemouth depot into the depot, tucked inside is 73141 Charlotte. The two locomotives are hauling five-car Class 442 Wessex Electric 2420, whilst out-of-sight to the rear is BR blue 73201 Broadlands. This consist would depart the depot a few hours later with 2411 in tow, and destined for Wolverton, running initially as 5Y97 22:05 Bournemouth depot to Eastleigh Yard, 2420 being provided for brake force, and the two Class 73's for 'brake conversion'. With the news on 31 March 2021 that the South Western Railway Class 442 fleet would be withdrawn from service with immediate affect, the transfer of units from Bournemouth to Wolverton for component recovery commenced on 28 May 2021, with final disposal to follow.

High and harsh sunlight, but I've been meaning to do this shot for a long time, so as I was in the area I thought I'd give it a go. Passing East Stoke, between Wool and Wareham, is 444034 operating 1W60 12:20 Weymouth - Waterloo. Above the train cab, and through the trees, can be seen the former Church of St Mary which was made redundant during 1988, it is now a private residence.

Recent vegetation clearance by Network Rail, and its contractor, has opened up this long lost view at Winterborne Monkton, as Great Western Railway service 2O79 15:40 Westbury - Weymouth continues south with about six miles left of its journey to complete. The former 'Thames turbo' Class 166 DMU still sports the old First Great Western blue livery, one of only about ten left in this livery, the Great Western Railway green livery having been applied to most of the fleet.

Dorchester
If you love the South Western Railway Class 444 'Desiro' EMU's then you're in for a treat on the Bournemouth to Weymouth line, because that's all you'll see. The monotony between Dorchester and Weymouth is occasionally broken up by the irregular GWR service, formed of the Class 165 and 166 DMU, but generally that's it for the Dorset coast. From a fleet of 45 5-car EMU's the Siemens built Class 444's have worked this line since taking over from the popular Class 442 Wessex Electric in April 2004, Again, dominated by the spectacular Maiden Castle, the final member of the fleet 444045 heads south operating 1W55 07:35 Waterloo - Weymouth.

Dorchester
1W56 10:20 Weymouth - Waterloo continues towards Dorchester, and is about to pass over the A35 Dorchester by-pass. In the distance to the right can be seen the ongoing urban sprawl of Poundbury, with building working seemingly never ending. This from the official Poundbury website: Poundbury is an urban extension to the Dorset county town of Dorchester, according to principles of architecture and urban planning as advocated by HRH The Prince of Wales in his book ‘A Vision of Britain’. Poundbury, built on Duchy of Cornwall land, is currently home to some 4,200 people in a mix of private and affordable housing, as well as providing employment for 2,300 people working in more than 207 shops, cafés, offices and factories. A further 550 people are employed in construction across the site and many more are self-employed and at times work from home.

A quick relocation from Bincombe Down, due to the hazy conditions, to Dorchester. Sadly, not what I had hoped to achieve as it seems the permitted passive footpath around Herringston Barrow has been withdrawn for what ever reason.
