The new South Wester Railway livery stands out nicely, much like the livery it supersedes, as a single Class 444 'Desiro' unit makes its way towards Christchurch, to the left, on a fine winters day.

Thornford
It's only 15:40 on a November afternoon, but the sun was already "on its knees" and starting to yellow, with sunset at 16:35. Knighton Hill forms a fine backdrop for First Great Western blue liveried 166215 which is seen near Thornford operating 2V72 14:55 Weymouth - Gloucester.

Dorchester
The body's senses were certainly getting stimulated by 47593 Galoway Princess and 47805 / D1935 Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 as they head out of Dorchester South; they looked great, they sounded fantastic, and they smelt good! Storming up the single line section to Moreton (Dorset) the pair work the return of The Dorset Coast Statesman running at 1Z32 16:20 Weymouth - Crewe, routed the same way as its outward run, via Bournemouth, Eastleigh, Salisbury, Bath Spa and the Welsh Marches.

Bincombe Tunnel
South Western Railway service 1W72 18:03 Weymouth - Waterloo, operated by 'Desiro' unit 444008, makes its ascent from Upwey up to the summit just north of Bincombe Tunnel, the gradient at this point rising at 1-in-50 from Upwey station to the site of Upwey Wishing Well Halt. Of course in steam days heavy trains would be banked out of Weymouth to the summit at Bincombe Tunnel signal box, but even now it is still a stiff climb for modern diesel and electric services.

Bincombe Tunnel
With two-aspect signalling between Dorchester and Weymouth, and just six minutes behind the preceding turbo unit, 1W69 14:00 Waterloo - Weymouth operated by 444008 slows for DR 189 signal which was at red as the signal section in advance of that was still occupied by the turbo unit. The average distance for each signal section is about three miles, which with a sparse service is generally adequate, until the service is such that trains are booked to follow each other, such as in this instance.

Along with Monkton & Came Halt a mile south of Dorchester a station was opened here known as Upwey Wishing Well Halt. Both stations opened on 1 June 1905, and would both close on 9 June 1957. Passing the site of the former Upwey Wishing Well Halt is GWR turbo unit 166205 operating 2O78 13:38 Gloucester - Weymouth. The train has just passed through the 47 yard long Bincombe No.2 Tunnel, whilst beyond can be seen the south portal of the 819 yard long Bincombe No.1 Tunnel.
