Thankfully the bank of high cloud in the distance was heading east, but ideally this angle is better suited to a more dark and moody sky, or some lovely cumulus clouds.

The field to the right, and the one beyond in the distance, is earmarked for a large housing development between the railway and the A35, which potentially compromises this photographic location in the future, and is the only decent open spot between Bournemouth and Brockenhurst. Details of the development can be found here known as the Christchurch Urban Extension with proposals for up to 875 new homes.

A shame it wasn't a Class 47 and coaches, or even a HST, but this is what long-distance travelers have to endure on the 257 mile journey this Arriva Cross-Country Voyager will make. A first for the Dorchester to Yeovil route (i think) with a visit from the Northern Belle set. Here it approaches Yetminster on its return working 1Z66 17:25 Weymouth - Swindon hauled by 57314, to the rear trails 47832. Equally as unusual is the sight of Mk.III sleeping coaches along this route, which make up the front two coaches, and perhaps even the first occasion this type of coach has traversed this section?

With the summer of 2018 now equaling that of 1976 the ground is now naturally starting to look dry, brown and scorched from the sun. The hundreds of sheep scattered over Maiden Castle were clearly suffering from the heat with most reduced to sitting down, although some were still nibbling at the dry grass. In the distance a 444 unit passes by bound for London, and beyond that in the hazy distance the Purbeck hills, the entire landscape looking rather barren and in desperate need of heavy rainfall.

Summer Saturday's in Dorset just aren't what they use to be when I was a lad. A quick look back 30 years ago to 1988 and at the time this shot was taken it would have been a Class 47 hauled 1O05 08:03 Newcastle - Weymouth that would have passed me. The highlight of 2018, if you want to call it that, is South Western Railways service to/from Corfe Castle, how times have changed. Here the regular unit 159014, chosen for publicity purposes as it sports the new SWR livery, approaches Dorchester South working 1L66 15:45 Corfe Castle - Waterloo via Weymouth, Yeovil Pen Mill, Yeovil Junction and Sherborne.

On summer Saturday's only from 26 May 2018 to 8 September 2018 South Western Railway have introduced a service onto the Swanage Railway. The second Saturday into the service, and SWR liveried 159003 is again used for the service, having been used the previous week on the inaugural service. Here it passes over Creech Bottom UWC between Furzebrook Sidings and Worgret Junction operating 2G04 14:10 Corfe Castle - Wareham. Originating at Basingstoke the unit takes a very indirect route to get to Corfe Castle, operating as 1L11 07:22 from Basingstoke via Salisbury, Gillingham, Yeovil Junction, Yeovil Pen Mill, Weymouth and finally Wareham before heading down to Corfe Castle. Three trips are undertaken in total between Wareham and Corfe Castle whereby the unit then returns to London Waterloo as 1L66 15:45 from Corfe Castle, again in a very indirect manor running in reverse of the outward route. South Western Railway are promoting this service with special offers, and loading's are reportedly excellent already after just two weeks, more details can be found here www.southwesternrailway.com/destinations-and-offers/offer....

Wool
Surely there can't have been a weekend like it in Dorset for many years, with track renewals in the Dorchester area bringing with it eleven engineering trains, and thirteen locomotives, plus the annual Swanage Railway diesel gala attracting eleven locomotives. And for the first time during a gala weekend, which has now been running for eleven years, a main line shuttle service to Wareham with a 4TC unit top & tailed with Swanage Railways Class 33 No.33012 / D6515, and one other main line locomotive. That's a total of 24 locomotives concentrated on this area. Whilst some area's regularly see a high volume of locomotives, and loco-hauled traffic, the same cannot be said here in Dorset. Whilst the diesel gala had it's own "stars", it turns out the engineers trains did too, in the shape of large-logo 66789 British Rail 1948-1997. In glorious conditions it works 6G12 15:15 Dorchester South - Eastleigh Yard towards Wool with a train load of track panels, whilst out-of-sight one the rear is 66736 Wolverhampton Wanderers.

With the lunchtime cloud starting to burn-off and turning into a fine afternoon it was time for a change of location for the final couple of engineers trains up from the Dorchester area. Just four minutes behind the London bound South Western Railway service and it's full gloom, and such a pity with a shiny red Class 66 and its train of side-tippers set amongst the great setting of Keywsorth Estate, which surely would have looked superb in full sun? In superb weather conditions 66031 storms away from Wareham working 6N02 08:30 Dorchester South - Eastleigh Yard formed of red 'Lobster' wagons. With track renewals at Monkton, a mile south of Dorchester towards Weymouth, this would be the first of eleven trains out of the possession involving thirteen locomotives from four different freight operators. Although I had always intended for this to be my chosen location for the first three trains, this unfortunately is not the angle I had in mind, but with no pole or big ladder available, this view had to do.
