Dorset - 2014

Images from around my home county taken during 2014 will appear here.

Dorset - 2015

Hamworthy

Picture
A sad scene at Hamworthy as the 121 year old signalbox is demolished, now reduced to just the brick base, as the contractors continue clearing the site some ten days after they started.

More images of this signalbox and the demolition work, plus other locations between Bournemouth and Dorchester, can be found here.

Hamworthy

Picture
The final sunset for Hamworthy Junction signalbox.

An L&SWR Type 3B box it opened around 1893 and would finally close on 15 May 2014 after some 121 years service. Now some six months after closure demolition has commenced with the removal of the toilet, porch and steps, to allow scaffolding to be erected.

Running into the station passed the doomed structure is 444040 working 1W56 14:48 Weymouth - Waterloo, the service running via Fareham, Havant and Guildford due to engineering works.

More images of this signalbox, and others between Bournemouth and Dorchester, can be found here.

Furzebrook

Picture
SouthWest Trains staff special 1Z61 10:02 Waterloo - Corfe Castle formed of 158887 approaches Furzebrook Sidings.

Retiring SWT Fleet Planning Manager John Parsons was treated to a day out in the Purbecks, with a presentation in the Bankes Armes at Corfe Castle, before the train returned to Fareham.

As of 00:01 hrs on Monday 8 September 2014 Swanage Railway took over the responsibility from Network Rail of this section of line from just south south of Worgret Junction to the existing boundary at Motala Ground Frame, making this the first passenger carrying service over the now Swanage Railway owned section. Details of the lease signing can be found here.

Bincombe Tunnel

Picture
Rather a hazy day for landscape photography but the hay bales won't be around for long so make the most of it whilst they're still there.

A SouthWest Trains 444 unit gets away from Dorchester working 1W71 15:05 Waterloo - Weymouth.

The cranes in the distance are by Dorchester South station, and are working on the redevelopment of the former Eldridge Pope brewery site, now marketed as Brewery Square.

Bincombe Tunnel

Picture
You could certainly hear 47237 long before it came into view as it stormed through the 847 yard long Bincombe No. 1 Tunnel, before reaching the summit at the former Bincombe Tunnel signalbox (which would have been just off to the right in the cutting).

Working the final Dorset Coast Express of 2014 the veteran Class 47 heads 1Z69 17:36 Weymouth - London Victoria out of Bincombe and up towards Dorchester.

The class 47 had recently had some graffiti applied to it, see here, although it appears West Coast Railways have tried to remove it as best they can before working this tour.

Wool

Picture
Time is running out for the now closed signal boxes at Poole, Hamworthy and Wool which are due for demolition soon.

This is the rear of Wool signal box. Opened around 1890, and closed on 15 May 2014, the area between Parkstone and Winfrith is now controlled from a new Entrance - Exit panel at Basingstoke. This in itself is only temporary and the panel will transfer to Network Rail's new Rail Operating Centre, also at Basingstoke, some time in 2016.

Bournemouth

Picture
Not that it's every likely to happen in the real world but it makes a lovely backdrop, the magnificent ruins of Corfe Castle provides the setting to the rail based scenario at Streetwise in Bournemouth.

The centre opened on 12 November 1998 by Kate Hoey MP.

There is also another safety centre in Weymouth and both centres are part of the SafeWise Charity offering fantastic safety awareness in Dorset.

Company's like Alstom and Network Rail helped create the scenario by donating items including the cab, track, and signs..

Not everything is as it may first appear.

This is Streetwise in Bournemouth which is an interactive safety centre which has created an indoor village, with scenarios from everyday life, that aim to educate children (and adults) on various hazards and dangers all around them.

In this scenario a mock-up using a Pendolino cab highlights some of the dangers around the railway.

Worgret Junction

Picture
"Steam dreams" probably turns into a bit of a nightmare for some, for others it's a "diesel dream". With public sector workers on strike, including fire fighters, Steam Dreams 'Cathedrals Express' tour was diesel operated vice the planned steam traction to reduce any fire risk.

Its been some time since a West Coast Railways Class 37 has visited Swanage but approaching Worgret Junction is 37706 with the return 'Cathedrals Express' 1Z87 17:06 Swanage - Victoria.

Upwey

Picture
Surrounded by glorious Dorset countryside a Class 444 unit passes Coombe Farm near Upwey with a Weymouth bound service.

Just beyond the hills in the distance lies the village of Abbotsbury. Once rail served by a short branch off the mainline at Upwey & Broadwey - now simply known as Upwey - the line closed on 29 November 1952. This was one of many line closures in Dorset, the county now reduced to nothing more than one secondary mainline from Southampton to Weymouth, and the former Great Western main line from Thingley Junction to Weymouth; a shadow of its former self and now nothing more than a branch line.

The final evening of the month and it's a fine one.

This is actually formed off the rear portion of 1W75 17:05 Waterloo - Weymouth [which was formed of 444013], the front portion to Weymouth running fast from Southampton to Bournemouth, the rear portion - which is this service - following down behind stopping at all stations.

Summer Saturday's aren't quite what they used to be at Weymouth. A welcome relief to the monotony of the usual stuff is First Great Western's use of a HST set down and back from Bristol, here the return working - 1V67 17:28 Weymouth - Bristol T.M. is about to enter Bincombe No.1 Tunnel formed of OC49 set with power cars 43092 and 43144.

Swanage

Picture
The 71A Locomotive Group Class 33 No. D6515 / 33012 was named at Swanage Station on Thursday 12 June 2014.

Looking immaculate after a two year overhaul at Eastleigh Works its new nameplates - Lt Jenny Lewis RN - have just been unveiled, whilst overhead a Royal Navy Lynx helicopter from RNAS Yeovilton performs a fly-past. More details on Jenny Lewis can be found on the 71A Locomotive Groups website here and shots of its overhaul here.

The locomotive had previously been named after Bournemouth driver Stan Symes, although back in its British Rail days never carried a name.

Swanage

Picture
No prizes for guessing where this was taken.

In superb weather 33202 Dennis G. Robinson stands at Swanage with the 13:20 to Norden formed of two Bullied coaches.

Curiously the locomotive is missing the Danger Overhead Live Wires notices from the front ends under the cab windows.

What a complete contrast to the diesel gala just four weeks earlier when the platforms and trains were packed with enthusiasts.

Here 33202 Dennis G. Robinson stands at a relatively deserted Platform 2 at Swanage with the 12:00 to Norden. In the distance to the right of the goods shed can be seen D6515 / 33012 shunting around the station.

Worgret Junction

Picture
West Coast Railways Class 33 No. 33029 Glen Loy rounds the curve towards Worgret Junction hauling the Swanage Railway organised Purbeck Explorer II tour running as 1Z33 17:15 Swanage - Ealing Broadway.

Poole

Picture
It only seems like yesterday that Class 33/1 and 4TC sets were working all- day, every-day, on the Bournemouth to Weymouth line. In fact they've now been finished since May 1988 after working to and fro' for 21 years since the end of steam. The Class 491 4TC was eventually replaced by the Class 442 Wessex Electrics which were, in turn, themselves replaced by the Class 444 Desiro units.

For a brief moment, though, it seemed like the 1980s all over again as the second Class 33-hauled train in less than two hours passed by. This time, West Coast Railway's Class 33 No. 33029 Glen Loy - under the expert control of driver Mel Cox - approaches Poole operating The Purbeck Explorer 1 tour; running as 1Z33 10:24 Ealing Broadway - Swanage (via Kensington Olympia, Clapham Junction), formed of a London Underground 4TC set.

Poole

Picture
Making a very welcome return to service is D6515 (33012) owned by the 71A Locomotive Group.

Looking superb after spending the last two years out of traffic at Eastleigh Works, D6515 approaches Poole hauling Network SouthEast-liveried 50026 Indomitable, 50031 Hood and GB Railfreight owned and operated 73207 to the rear.
