Poole

Picture
Stunning weather and colours over Holes Bay - between Poole and Hamworthy - as a South West Trains Class 444 Desiro unit passes, bound for Weymouth.

This location was submitted by Poole-based photographer Graham Hobbs to the Network Rail Landscape Photographer of the Year 2012 competition which won him first prize for 'Lines In The Landscape'.

Great to see a local photographer and location winning a national award.

Worgret Junction

Picture
Looking more like the Highlands of Scotland than Dorset, West Coast Railways 37516 leads 37706 towards Worgret Junction with Spitfire Railtours' Purbeck Growler 1Z50 16:30 Swanage - Crewe.

Almost looking more like a preserved railway than the national network, 31106 passes Bradford Peverell hauling 4Z10 11:03 Bristol Kingsland Road - Derby RTC (via Weymouth).

Sherborne

Picture
Stood in Somerset photographing a train in Dorset.

Right on the border of the two counties as a Class 31 passes with a Serco test train.

Sherborne Abbey can just be seen above the dead tree to the left.

Bincombe

Picture
I remember saying to someone a couple of years ago: "It's a real challenge to find just a quarter of a mile of railway free of vegetation, overhead cables, posts, location cabinets and lineside clutter."

One such location, though, that rated as one of my favourite locations - even though it had some lineside furniture - was here,  just north of Bincombe Tunnel.

Sadly, this quarter of a mile is a bit more cluttered since this shot was taken by the addition of a GSM-R mast; it was good whilst it lasted.

Here, an Arriva Trains Wales 150 is sandwiched between a First Great Western 153 and 150 units heading past Bincombe on an up train out of Weymouth.

11 August 2009

A cloudless August afternoon as an Arriva Trains Wales 150 paired up with a First Great Western 153 make their way south towards Bincombe Tunnel heading for Weymouth.

Bincombe Tunnel

Picture
This was one of my favourite local locations from which to photograph passing trains until a GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications - Railway) mast appeared.

Although shots are still possible here at Bincombe, a shot such as this would mean the mast would dominate the scene just behind the leading coach.

SouthWest Trains 444 'Desiro' unit No. 444035 heads towards Bincombe Tunnel with a Waterloo to Weymouth service.

Bincombe

Picture
With cloud to the north of the county, the decision was made to stay close to the coast for 2O67 09:09 Bristol T.M. - Weymouth.

Heading through classic Dorset countryside near Bincombe Tunnel,
67025 Western Star heads the additional summer Saturday working, royal locomotive 67005 Queen's Messenger being the tail gunner.

Poole

Picture
A reminder of when summers were summery. Here's hoping 2013 will be better than the last year or two.

A SWT 444 'Desiro' unit passing Holes Bay between Hamworthy and Poole on a lovely summer's evening.

Woolcombe

Picture
A lovely afternoon to take in my favourite Shire; Dorset.

A pair of First Great Western Class 158s make the climb up Woolcombe Bank towards Evershot, then it's downhill from the other side towards Maiden Newton.

Bincombe

Picture
With the royal party now seeing the more exotic parts of Weymouth, the Royal Train quickly departed empty stock back to Wolverton, again passing the north end of Bincombe Tunnel, this time 67005 Queen's Messenger working the train.

During 2009, this was one of only fourteen trips made by the Royal Train.

Bincombe

Picture
As part of a visit to Weymouth and other areas of Dorset, the Queen and Prince Philip travelled down on the Royal Train which is seen here approaching Bincombe Tunnel with the royal visitors on board.

As would be expected, both royal locomotives top and tail the set with
67006 Royal Sovereign leading.

Bincombe

Picture
A wonderful location, and one I would have to rate as one of my favourites, sadly blighted by 'railway furniture' such as a GSM-R mast, speed boards, signal and location cabinets, and this electrical sub-station for the conductor-rail.

An up train is seen just north of Bincombe Tunnel working from Weymouth to Waterloo.

Bincombe

Picture
Ever wished you'd stood in a spot some years earlier knowing what you know now. Well rewind a few years and this would have been a Class 37 and about four coaches which plodded up and down several times a day between Bristol / Westbury and Weymouth.

Here a Class 150 heads north away from Bincombe Tunnel and up towards Dorchester.

Branksome

Picture
A rare pairing, even when they were both gainfully employed by SouthWest Trains. Here, 73109 Battle of Britain 50th Anniversary runs into Branksome with 73235 working as 0Y77 12:25 Eastleigh Works - Bournemouth T&RSMD in heavy rain.

In 2013, 73235 is still based at Bournemouth depot as a shunt engine but is restricted to the depot - reportedly due to get a repaint shortly at the depot's new paint facility.

73109 is now owned by Locotec and, although still sporting the SWT livery, has had all branding removed. It still sees ocassional main line use with GBRf on engineer's trains.

Picture
A local landmark building to the right is Barclays House, more interesting though to the left is veteran Class 47 No. 47760 with the 'Dorset Coast Express' 1Z71 16:24 Poole - Norwich prior to departure.

This was one of two railtours through Poole on this day with 37602 & 37069 operating to Weymouth on Spitfire Railtours 'Wessexman' tour.

Poole

Picture
On 4 January, 2010, Class 66 66048 suffered substantial damage whilst hauling 4N47 13:14 Inverness Yard - Mossend Yard after derailing and ending up in trees down an embankment at Carrbridge.

The locomotive was consequently withdrawn and placed into store. The RAIB report on the incident can be viewed here.

Some seven months prior to that incident - and still sporting EWS livery before being repainted in Stobart Rail livery - 66048 is seen here at Poole working 6N07 16:12 Poole - Eastleigh engineer's train.
