Holes Bay - Poole
A stunning end to the day as a SouthWest Trains 444 'Desiro' unit heads west over the Holes Bay causeway in Poole.
This was to become one of my all time favourite images - the combination of light, location and swans all coming together perfectly.

You normally get some swans here but it's not too often there are this many.

This is now the only regular freight flow out of Dorset, the other regular freight flow being stone from Whatley Quarry to Hamworthy although this tends to be sporadic.

Holes Bay - Poole
My "local location" this is Holes Bay in Poole, Dorset, and about a mile from home. Here a Weymouth to Waterloo service crosses the causeway between Hamworthy and Poole. The rear coach is just passing over one of two bridges on the causeway, this being Creekmoor Viaduct, the other one closer to Hamworthy being Upton Viaduct.

A very rare outing for SouthWest Trains EDL No. 73235 as it is seen approaching Pokesdown hauling a failed rail grinder on a pretty

to rescue and haul it to Poole.

East Stoke
My fifteen minutes of fame, so to speak.
Railways Illustrated Magazine Photographic Awards Infrastructure Picture Of The Year Winner 2008.
A pure chance shot at East Stoke crossing near Wool, in Dorset, as crossing keeper Jamie Chapman opens the gates for a horse and rider.
This location will soon be abolished with a CCTV controlled crossing planned to replace the wooden gates and with it the final (and only) gated crossing left on the Waterloo to Weymouth line will be consigned to history.

Opened in 1904, the 180-lever Shrewsbury Severn Bridge signal box is now the largest manual signal box still in operation on Network Rail.
And with no immediate plans for closure, there is no reason why it will not still be standing for many years to come.
Passing the signal box is EWS Class 66 No. 66216 with 6V75 09:30 Dee Marsh - Margam steel train.
The lines branching off to the left under the locomotive head east towards Wolverhampton whilst the train is heading south and towards the Welsh Marches route.

Bincombe Tunnel
Hertfordshire Railtours Inter-City Merrymaker Weymouth Away-Day - hauled by Fragonset-liveried 31128 Charybdis and 31452 Minotaur - climbs towards Bincombe No. 2 Tunnel, the train running as 1Z33 18:18 Weymouth - Minehead. To the rear is Inter-City-liveried 31454 The Heart of Wessex.
This was once a fine and open location from which to watch, and photograph, trains climbing out of Weymouth up the 1-in-50 gradient to
the summit at Bincombe signal box which was located at the north end
of Bincombe No.1 Tunnel.
But, like everywhere else, it is sadly now encroached by a tunnel of
trees and vegetation. Compare this shot to one taken here a few years earlier.
